You can meet Philip Roth, one of Newark’s (and the world’s) great living literary legends, next week on Wednesday May 20, when he receives the 3rd Annual Charles Cummings Award “for spreading public awareness and appreciation of Newark’s history through his many prize-winning novels.” The award will be given by the Newark Preservation & Landmarks Committee and the presentation takes place at the Committee’s 35th Annual Awards at Broadway House on 298 Broadway (@ Second Avenue) from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Requested contributions will be $25 for members of the Landmarks Committee and $40 for others. Advance reservations are needed, and can be made until May 18 by calling the committee’s office at 973-622-4910. Although you need to call to reserve, you can pay at the door. Light snacks and nonalcoholic drinks will be available.
